Background of the Study:
Religious practices play a significant role in shaping the mental health treatment landscape in Eti-Osa Local Government, Lagos State. Many residents incorporate spiritual interventions, such as prayer, meditation, and faith healing, into their mental health care routines (Akin, 2023). These practices often coexist with, or sometimes replace, conventional psychiatric treatments. The cultural and spiritual dimensions of mental health have led to a growing interest in understanding how religious beliefs influence treatment adherence, patient outcomes, and the overall approach to mental health care (Olatunji, 2024). Recent research has underscored the potential benefits of integrating religious practices with medical treatment, while also noting the risks of neglecting evidence-based interventions (Balogun, 2025). This study critically examines the dual role of religious practices in enhancing and possibly complicating mental health treatment, providing a comprehensive analysis of its implications for policy and practice.

Statement of the Problem:
The coexistence of religious practices and orthodox mental health treatments in Eti-Osa has raised concerns about potential conflicts and gaps in care. Many patients may prioritize spiritual interventions over evidence-based treatments, leading to delayed or inadequate management of mental health issues. This dichotomy creates challenges for practitioners aiming to provide holistic care, necessitating a critical evaluation of how religious practices impact treatment outcomes (Akin, 2023).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To examine the influence of religious practices on mental health treatment outcomes.
  2. To explore the perceptions of patients and healthcare providers regarding faith-based interventions.
  3. To recommend strategies for integrating religious and conventional mental health care.

Research Questions:

  1. How do religious practices influence mental health treatment adherence?
  2. What are the perceived benefits and drawbacks of integrating faith-based practices with psychiatric care?
  3. How can mental health services effectively accommodate religious beliefs?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Religious practices significantly affect mental health treatment adherence.
  2. Integration of faith-based interventions with conventional therapy improves patient outcomes.
  3. Patients prioritizing religious practices exhibit different treatment trajectories compared to those using only orthodox methods.

Significance of the Study:
This study is significant in that it elucidates the complex role of religious practices in mental health care, offering evidence that could inform more culturally sensitive treatment models. It aims to support the development of integrated care strategies that honor patients’ spiritual needs while ensuring effective mental health management (Akin, 2023; Olatunji, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to the topic only.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Religious Practices: Spiritual activities such as prayer, meditation, and faith healing.
  • Mental Health Treatment: Interventions designed to manage psychological and psychiatric conditions.
  • Integration: The combined use of traditional religious practices with conventional medical treatments.
