Background of the Study:
Religious practices play a significant role in shaping the mental health treatment landscape in Eti-Osa Local Government, Lagos State. Many residents incorporate spiritual interventions, such as prayer, meditation, and faith healing, into their mental health care routines (Akin, 2023). These practices often coexist with, or sometimes replace, conventional psychiatric treatments. The cultural and spiritual dimensions of mental health have led to a growing interest in understanding how religious beliefs influence treatment adherence, patient outcomes, and the overall approach to mental health care (Olatunji, 2024). Recent research has underscored the potential benefits of integrating religious practices with medical treatment, while also noting the risks of neglecting evidence-based interventions (Balogun, 2025). This study critically examines the dual role of religious practices in enhancing and possibly complicating mental health treatment, providing a comprehensive analysis of its implications for policy and practice.
Statement of the Problem:
The coexistence of religious practices and orthodox mental health treatments in Eti-Osa has raised concerns about potential conflicts and gaps in care. Many patients may prioritize spiritual interventions over evidence-based treatments, leading to delayed or inadequate management of mental health issues. This dichotomy creates challenges for practitioners aiming to provide holistic care, necessitating a critical evaluation of how religious practices impact treatment outcomes (Akin, 2023).
